Acrylic on canvas, 32” x 38”, circa 1993, William Schickel, signed Schickel lower right. Dad was sometimes called a disciple of Jacques Maritain. He was especially fond of this book Art & Scholasticism — a short book on his philosophy of art. Among Dad’s old book which I keep at the gallery is a first edition of We Have Been Friends Together by Raïssa Maritain signed by Jacques Maritain. Among Dad’s old papers I found a check written by Raïssa Maritain in 1945 to the New York Phone Company. I have no idea how Dad came to have this. I keep it in the book so I have both signatures together. I have included pictures of the books and of the painting at the Ellen Noel Museum of Art in Texas.
