SACRED PASSION: the Art of William Schickel (second edition)

$50.00

By Gregory Wolfe, University of Notre Dame Press, 2009. This book explores the life and prolific career of American artist William Schickel (1919-2009). He produced a large body of mostly commissioned work in painting, sculpture, stained glass, furniture design and architectural design. His renovation of the Abbey of Gethsemani, where he worked personally with Thomas Merton, won the AIA Gold Medal Award in 1968. His work can be found in many private collections and museums including the Vatican Museum. In 2025 the documentary Quest For Beauty: the Life and Art of William Schickel was released — it is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Many of his works can be seen at the William Schickel Gallery (WilliamSchickelGallery.com) in Loveland, Ohio. He fused contemporary art and religious iconography — braving resistance with creative courage and spiritual depth — to leave a lasting legacy.
